Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Brian Schatz was re-elected to another six-year term, defeating Republican state Representative Bob McDermott. He was the heavy favorite to win, the candidates did not debate, and Schatz has not done much visible campaigning. Schatz first joined the Senate in 2012. McDermott, a former Marine, has served 16 years in the Hawaii House of Representatives, serving as assistant minority leader.
