A man died in waters off Hanalei Beach Wednesday. Kauai police have identified the man as 67-year-old Janusz Jakubowicz of Poland. Police, along with personnel with the Hanalei fire station, Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards, and others responded to the incident shortly after 5 pm after a call about distressed swimmers in the water west of the Hanalei Pavilion lifeguard tower. Two swimmers made it to shore but Jakubowicz became unresponsive in the water and was brought to shore by local surfers. He was taken to the hospital but could not be revived. The official cause of death is under investigation.
