Kauai Island health care got a multi-million dollar booster shot.

The Helmsley Charitable Trust will grant more than $10.6 million to Wilcox Medical Center in Lihu‘e to develop imaging programs and capabilities.

The grant is the largest gift ever made to the medical center.

“The Helmsley Charitable Trust is thrilled to welcome Hawai‘i to our Rural Healthcare Program,” said Walter Panzirer, a trustee for the charitable trust.

“This grant — the first of what we expect to be many across the islands — will provide Kaua‘i residents with top-notch diagnostic care closer to home so they don’t have to travel off-island for crucial scans and tests.”

The money will be used by the medical center to purchase a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine.
