Overdose Deaths

In the past two months on the Big Island, there have been one confirmed overdose death and two suspected overdose deaths of young victims.  Kauai Now News reports they are a 20-year-old male, an 18-year-old male, and a female minor.  Kauai had 22 overdose deaths in 2021, nine of them attributed to fentanyl.  The fentanyl task force, created last may in Hawaii County, says the new report shows most overdose deaths are related to methamphetamine, and people using are long-time abusers, between 45 and 64, typically dying from heart failure as a result of chronic use.  People dying of fentanyl are typically in their teens and 20’s.
