University of Hawaii researchers have discovered two new viruses that could threaten the hibiscus, the state flower. The viruses are known as the hibiscus betacarmovirus and hibiscus soymovirus. Researchers tested 54 samples of hibiscus, with 12 of them, or 22 percent, showing up positive for at least one of the viruses. Experts say pruning hedges with clean tools will help prevent spreading either one.
