Three former Hawaii Prison guards were found guilty of civil rights violations for assaulting an inmate and trying to cover it up. A U-S judge ordered Jason Tagaloa, Craig Pinkney and Jonathan Taum into custody after a jury convicted them last week. A fourth former correctional officer, Jordan DeMattos, previously pleaded guilty for his role in the 2015 assault and cover-up, and testified for the government at the three-week trial. The Hawaii Department of Public Safety fired the men in 2016.
Governor David Ige has signed a bill establishing a new state Department of Law Enforcement. The last time a new department was formed in the state was in 1989, over 30 years ago, when the Hawaii Department of Public Safety was created.
County and state agencies and other emergency response partners are conducting joint training and exercises on Kauai’i that started last week with the Hawai’i National Guard’s 93rd Civil Support Team. On Thursday a full-scale weapons of mass destruction exercise will be conducted from 8 AM to 3 PM on the Kaua’i Community College Campus.
