The United States Navy and NASA want the community’s input on the Navy’s proposal to continue to use 8,172-acres of state lands on Kauai.
NASA’s proposal includes their continued use of 23 acres of state lands on Kauai in support of measuring Earth’s rotation and local land motion at Kokee Park Geophysical Observatory (KPGO).
The proposal supports the Navy’s continued training, testing and facility operations at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF).
The Navy does not train or test on these lands; the land is used to maintain safety in environmental efforts.
The Navy and NASA have reviewed the potential environmental consequences, including cultural practices, public health and safety, air quality, transportation, land use and water resources.
The State of Hawaii granted permission to the Navy and NASA, but the agreement is set to expire between 2027 and 2030.
If the Navy and NASA are ensured to continue their operations, it is anticipated that local jobs for Kauai residents would be preserved and conserve natural and cultural resources.
The Navy and NASA invite the public to attend public meetings to review and comment on the proposal. There will be three meetings on Kauai, each broadcasted live online from 5-8 p.m.:
- July 15, Kauai Veterans Center
- July 16, Kekaha Neighborhood Center
- July 17, Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort, Makai Ballroom
You can submit comments online, in person or by mail to the address, Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, Environmental OPHEV2. Submit them by Aug. 7 at 11:59 p.m.
