Swimming Pool Closed/Hurricane Update/Monk Seal Released

Kaua’i County announced Wednesday that the Kapa’a swimming pool is closed for two hours this morning.  The pool is set to be shut down from 7:30 to 9:30 AM due to maintenance.  The pool will reopen at 10 am for scheduled swim classes.

Hurricane Darby has grown stronger in the last day, but is expected to weaken in the next few days.  The latest named tropical cyclone in the central Pacific was just over 11 hundred miles east of Hilo as of Wednesday evening with maximum sustained winds at 115 miles per hours according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.  The category three storm was moving west-northwest at about 16 miles per hour.

Crews released a Hawaiian monk seal back into the wild after being treated at the Big Island’s Marine Mammal Center for ingested fishing gear.  The animal was found last month apparently in distress with fishing gear hanging from its mouth.  The juvenile male was fitted with a temporary satellite tag and released successfully this week.
